Is there a place for social networking sites at work?

I believe there is a place for social networking sites at work. Myspace, twitter and facebook are the most popular. In our computer fundamentals class last week we did a little experiment with twitter. The teacher sent our "we're in *** room, Come on down!" and sure enough ten people came on down. It would be easy to type something on a social network for all to see and you could relay the important information in seconds. Many people have these sites linked to cell phone text messaging. You could be in trouble at work and write a message on twitter and someone completely away from you can come to save the day. It could really come in handy.
But on the other hand you have the people that abuse the power. These people get on every few minutes just to talk about the mall, flowers, bacon strips or whatever is on their mind (not work related). This can slow them down at the workplace and make them very unproductive.
All in all the good outways the bad in my eyes. And in this day and age we have more and more people logging on to these networking sites. If it gets out of hand i can see why employers might outlaw these sites but untill that wave sweeps the nation, we might as well take advantage of this technology.

  1. Lots of thought went in to this. Great work. Can you think of a specific example of how social networking could be a bad thing in the work place?

  2. I look around the room in some of my classes and see people on facebook talking with whoever is on right now and talkin about a party that happened last weekend or something. Im sure examples such as this happen in the work place and it can just get you in trouble. It keeps you from doing your work and your boss may see it as a major distraction. maybe company's should use special programs for work porposes only and the upper management people can keep an eye on it.
